Social-Emotional Assessment (Virtual)
Purpose
The purpose of a social-emotional assessment is to identify and better understand issues related to social, emotional, or behavioral functioning. This type of assessment may be used to evaluate older youth/adolescents who are displaying:
- difficulties with attention/concentration or hyperactivity/impulsivity
- significant anxiety/worry
- obsessive-compulsive tendencies
- sadness/depression or emotional reactivity
- difficulties getting along with others
- maladaptive behaviors
- symptoms of other emotional or behavioral disorders
Benefits
When emotional or behavioral difficulties are the primary concern, the most appropriate referral is for a social-emotional assessment, which may include an interview with the primary caregiver(s), formal and informal assessment/interviewing with the adolescent regarding emotional well-being and social development, and contact with other informants (e.g., counselor, teacher, physician, psychiatrist, or family members). Typical diagnoses considered include: ADHD, Anxiety, OCD, Mood Disorders, PTSD, and ASD.
The benefits of a social-emotional assessment include:
- Diagnostic clarity and formulation, leading to improved understanding for self and others
- Treatment recommendations and identification of relevant resources
- Recommendations for caregivers

- Comprehensive report
- Identification of other professionals who would be helpful to involve
